Edmund Booth - 1168 Words

Edmund Booth was an extraordinary man, especially considering the difficult pioneer era he lived in. He was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts on August 24, 1810. On March 8th, 1815, at the age of four, Edmund contracted meningitis, and was not expected to survive this horrible disease. After being very ill for three months, to the surprise of many, Edmund survived. Unfortunately, the meningitis cost him his hearing (slight hearing left in one ear), and the sight in one eye. By age eight, his remaining hearing in the one ear had dissipated, and he was now profoundly deaf. Although he was now disadvantaged in a time when disadvantaged people didn’t fare well, he once again proved everyone wrong, by becoming one the most functional people†¦show more content†¦The content of Edmonds writings clearly showed his above average education, passion for reading, and concerns for proper education for the deaf. Around 1830, Edmund was invited to be a temporary teacher at the American School for the Deaf, as the current teacher had become ill. His first class contained four girls and eleven boys. One of the students was named, Mary Ann Walworth. Mary Ann was a cute young teenager that also became deaf due to spotted fever. Mary Ann left quite an impression on her young teacher. Edmund now age 21, six foot and three inches tall, and built like a horse, was a strapping figure of a man. In the fall of 1831 Edmund became a full-time instructor at the American School for the Deaf. Unfortunately, Edmond was struggling to survive on his teacher’s salary. In time, Edmund because disillusioned by his financial struggles and low salary and decided it was time to leave. During Edmund’s travels to find himself he settled in Amanosa, Iowa. This is where Edmund founded the, Iowa School for the Deaf. Additionally, this is where he came across the young deaf student that caught his eye in his previous classroom, Mary Ann Walworth. In time, they dated, married, and began a family. Edmund never thought he would leave his family. Outsourcing Is Defined As Well As Trust Issues - 1958 Words

Outsourcing is defined as the process of purchasing goods and services from outside vendors rather than producing the same goods or providing the same services within the organization. Outsourcing does not come without risks, but it also has its benefits as well. Gaining services or products from outside sources can be very beneficial, considering the alternative that the firm will have to produce them themselves. However, on main risk that is incurred when outsourcing is that when a firm does outsource, they leave the supply of that product or service in the hands of someone of whom they cannot control, contrary to controlling their own supply. Ethical issues are at hand here, as well as trust issues. As you will see in this paper, many different opinions about outsourcing are present among different financial investors and financial officers. Management teams and management leaders are the head personnel that weigh the pro s and con s of outsourcing, and this paper will briefly sum marize the various opinions, pro s, con s, large benefits, and ethical issues dealing with outsourcing. How does Olivia appear more likeable than Orsino in the play even though both of them are quite similar Essay Example For Students

How does Olivia appear more likeable than Orsino in the play even though both of them are quite similar Essay In Shakespeares Twelfth Night, we see that Orsino and the one he loves, Olivia, are presented under the same light. They both have the same characteristics and, moreover, they share the same idea of: in love with the fact or idea of being in love but not loving truthfully. Concerning Olivia however, she seems to be, in the audiences point of view, more appreciated than Orsino. She acts in a cleverer, more inventive and in a true approach compared to Orsino who seems to be irritating, stupid and who compares love to food! This essay will describe how Shakespeare presents her in a more likeable way than Orsino, what are the deeds of Olivia for her shrewdness to be distinguished from Orsino and lastly why does she seem more sociable seen from our eyes. Firstly, let us have an overview on the comparable characteristics of Olivia and Orsino. To begin with, Olivia and Orsino are both very wealthy and come from the privileged social classes. In the case of Olivia, she is a countess and concerning Orsino, he is the Duke of Illyria not neglecting the fact that they are both visited by Feste the fool. Next, the theme of love which associates these two is apparent seeing that they are somehow in love with only the fact of being in love, that is they do not love whoever they say they feel affection for with but the only idea of being in love; especially Orsino who should have been expressing his love counting on himself and not on others: Orsino: O then unfold the passion of my love, Surprise her with discourse of my dear faith;*1 Regarding Olivia, who pretends loving Viola ends up marrying Sebastian. There we make out that Olivia is irritated towards Orsino and thus refuses his love. In my opinion, I believe that Olivias love is truthful and Orsinos phony. However, supporting the fact that they are just in love with the idea of being in love, they both end up marrying different persons which they did not pretend to love although the persons they end up marrying are, in a certain point of view, male and female versions of the same person(Sebastian and Viola). Meanwhile based on another aspect of their similarities, we discover that both are in love with people who do not love them for example as revealed by act one, Orsino loves Olivia who is not in love with him and same concerns Olivia who has affections for Cesario (Viola disguised) but that affection is unfortunately not reciprocal. Finally yet importantly regarding their similarities, they are simply among the main characters and protagonists of the play. Secondly, we will find out why Olivia appears under a more likeable light than Orsino. First of all, in the very beginning of the play, we find out that Olivia repudiates the love letters and verbal messages sent from Orsino. This first event of the whole play addresses the theme of stupidity directly to Orsino. Sending messages expressing his love means that he is not brave enough to go and express that love on his own. Later in the play, we observe that he is tipped (given a hint) by Cesario (Viola) that she is not a castrated man but a disguised woman. There Orsino apparently did not manage to understand what Viola meant: Viola: I am all the daughters of my fathers house, And all the brothers, too and yet I know not*2 .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 , .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .postImageUrl , .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 , .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032:hover , .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032:visited , .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032:active { border:0!important; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032:active , .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032 .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1260beb990d4433b6a50d7a430465032:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The crucible, Arthur Miller EssayConsequently, we spectators, tend to give less admiration to Orsino following the disastrous mental abilities (stupid and irrational) he demonstrates in the play. Thirdly regarding Olivia, we see that to refuse the proposals of Orsino, Olivia pretends that she is mourning her dead brother and father for seven years, here relating on the theme of sadness rather than death: Valentine: The element itself, till seven years heat, Shall not behold her face at ample view;*3 The end of the seven years, at that time, would mean that Olivia would already be an old-aged lady in reason of the low life expectancy in those days. In addition, in the middle of the play where Olivia declares her love to Viola (who she thinks is Cesario) and remains open with her proves that the supposedly mourning of Olivia was only an excuse to stay distant from Orsino. Moreover, in order for Cesario to return, Olivia sends her a ring knowing that she will not accept it therefore she will feel the obligation of returning it. These examples show the clever abilities Olivia present, for instance, we spectators offering to a certain extent more admiration towards her. Lastly, we also feel some compassion and sympathy towards Olivia knowing that she lost not only her father but brother too. Finally, we come to a conclusion that Shakespeare makes Olivia appear more likeable than Orsino even though both share the same characteristics by demonstrating cleverer and more inventive methods of solving problems in the side of Olivia compared to Orsino. We can also conclude, speaking about the audience now, that this example demonstrates the limitation of the human brain as it is known that most persons will favour mentally stronger people (Olivia) than weaker ones (Orsino).

Wheel Invention Essays - Creativity, Invention, Patent Law, Wheel

Wheel Invention The invention of the wheel was a miraculous invention, along with the airplane, and the telephone. All the inventions that have ever been created weren't just something that was already drawn out on a piece of paper for the inventors. They had to think. They had to imagine the masterpiece before it was even a physical object. These people weren't just thinkers or inventors. These people "Thought Outside the Box." The writer Sarah Susanka, the author of "The Not So Big House," once said that "The ability to think creatively, responding to needs and wishes, not to preconceived ideas of what something should look like, then the problem will be solved." [SIC] What I think she means by this is if you are going to make something or do something for the people of the world, don't assume or pretend you know what they want. Go out, ask them, figure it out and then when you have completed the finished product it will be successful. Many people who try to invent something are not successful because they are afraid to break the confines of the outline. What I mean by this is that the people are so accustomed to thinking like everybody else, they are afraid to explore the possibilities of their mind. They can't picture something that already isn't there. Often a person will see something that was invented and wonder why they never thought of something so simple. The answer is very uncomplicated... they didn't break the confines of the out line. Normally, when people do a puzzle, they will have to think about the answers, sort of like a maze. If what they first try doesn't work then they have to try another direction to see if something else will work. Those people, even though they don't know it have just thought outside the box. They have decided that rather than quitting, they are going to keep trying, and see if they can find another way to do it. Even though the answer was right in front of them, they still had to think and look for it. One great thinker is Werner Heisenberg. He invented "Matrix mechanics." It was the first version of quantum mechanics. He didn't invent the concepts of matrix algebra; however, focused attention on a set of quantised probability amplitudes. The "matrix" mechanics was further developed in a three-author paper by Heisenberg, Born and Jordan, published in 1926. Heisenberg published The Physical Principles of Quantum Theory in 1928. In 1932 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for this work. Although he was awarded the Nobel for his matrix mechanics, he was much better known for his Uncertainty Principle that he discovered in 1927. Heisenberg was quoted in 1969 as saying the following about the Slovay Conference in Brussels that he attended in 1927 : "To those of us who participated in the development of atomic theory, the five years following the Slovay Conference in Brussels in 1927 looked so wonderful that we often spoke of them as the golden of age of atomic physics. The great obstacles that had occupied all our efforts in the preceding years had been cleared out of the way; the gate to an entirely new field, the quantum mechanics of the atomic shells stood wide open, and fresh fruits seemed ready for the picking." Around the year 1925 Heisenberg was working on a new description of matter. His ruminations led him to assert a new principle that has become a "Hallmark" of quantum theory. This description of matter is now known as matrix mechanics. It is the complete mathematical theory of the behaviour of atoms and their constituents. It is a very difficult field to study, but with the help of Born and Jordan, the study was a success. The matrix mechanics is a part of mathematics known as the quantum mechanics. So the quantum ideas work. They are developed from the concept that matter is wave-like in its behaviour. The quantum mechanics remained mysterious until 1927, when Heisenberg -following conversations with Bohr and Einstein ? discovered the uncertainty principle. Heisenberg's "Uncertainty Principle" said that it is impossible to find out exactly where an object is and how fast it is moving at the same time. If you were to try that process then you would have to stop the object to see where it is at that speed, or at that point in time. This is fine but as soon as you stop it you no longer have to speed

In early fifties bubble gum become incredibly popular. The trend was so strong that even lead actors and the first rank politicians could be noticed blowing bubbles in public. The completions on blowing the biggest bubble was also very popular. After being tremendously popular for over five decades, bubble gum sales markedly declined over the past few years. The reasons for such a phenomenon are bad marketing and weakening of the â€Å"chewing† trend. As opposed to the popular opinion that bubble gum taste is due to the unique recipe, this is the taste the pure gum with adding some components, used when making usual chewing gum, such as fruit extracts and various others not known to the wide public. It is known, however, that modern bubble gum consists first of all of masticatory basis (mainly synthetic polymers) sometimes with the add of material from juice of Sapodilla tree or from the soft resin of conifers. It also includes flavours, preservatives and other food additions. Thus, the writers have to explore, investigate and correlate all these facts, add to them their own opinion on the matter and present it as a result of their study, new research revealing new nuances in this old and well know story.

The Tendency of the Firm in a Monopolistic Market Essay

The Tendency of the Firm in a Monopolistic Market - Essay Example These differences between perfect competition and monopolistic competition have social welfare implications. In perfect competition, marginal revenue is the same as price and this reflects the optimum utility of goods as the price is also equal to marginal cost. Supply also meets the demand at the most efficient level. This is illustrated in Figure 1 where supply and demand achieved equilibrium. The case is different in a monopolistic competition where there are few or no competition. The tendency of the firm in a monopolistic market is to restrict production as can be shown in Figure 1 to drive prices up as represented by P1. The market then becomes inefficient because firms are not producing at a minimum cost where price is much higher than the cost of production. This has an implication in social welfare as inefficiency would mean requiring more resources to achieve the same utility of good thereby increasing the social cost. This is not the case in a perfect competition where mar ginal revenue is the same as price. In the diagram in Figure 2, a competitive market achieves an equilibrium where demand is met with supply (MC and AR intersect). It meant that the social service can be had at its cost and is, therefore, the most optimum level where the needed service is appropriately supplied without waste. Thus comparing perfect competition with a monopolistic market, price in the monopolistic market is higher as shown in P1 compared to Price of perfect competition in P2. Production is also inefficient in the monopolistic market as shown by Q1 as it is deliberately restricted to drive the price or P1.
